Over the years Witbank News has become an integral part of the community of Witbank/eMalahleni.
In 1903 the following appeared in the Middelburg Observer/Witbank News: “It is our aim to criticize when we feel that criticism is necessary and to give praise when praise is due and the job done, to the benefit of the public.” After almost a hundred years, it is still the policy of Witbank News.
The newspaper is seen as the watchdog of the community – that, without prejudice or preference, inform and report accurately and objectively about the joys and pains of the city and its people.
Witbank News counts as one of the top three best selling community newspapers in the country.
With a dynamic team of journalists and sales personnel, our vision and mission is to, on a weekly basis, deliver the best quality product to our readers.
Some history:
Between 1903 and 1909 news about Witbank, was incorporated into the Middelburg Observer under the heading “Community News”. The Middelburg Observer and the Witbank News were published as one newspaper between 1909 and 1916.
By 1917 the town had developed so much that it justified having its own newspaper and the “Witbank News” was born.
The first editor of the newspaper was the founder, Mr Oscar Henry Frewin himself. He was followed by editors like Baden Hammond, Leonard Neill, Jeanette McClain, Lynn Siebert, Marietjie Visser, Leatitia van Wyk and at present it is Amanda Botha.
In May 1980 three quarters of the OH Frewin Company was sold to Perskor, during a time when a lot of community newsapapers were sold to Perskor.
The Caxton group, to which Witbank News belongs bought Perskor in 1998.
The newspaper is still printed in Middelburg.
